The municipality of Tuusniemi in Northeast-Savonia is located at the eastern border of central Savonia and cut in half by the wide, clear-watered Lake Juojärvi, which also has plenty of islands and capes. Nature gives outstanding surroundings to the whole area. About 20 % of the area of Tuusniemi municipality is water. The largest lakes Juojärvi and Rikkavesi are situated at the former border area. The bedrock of the area has been formed 1,8 million years ago during the Karelian folding. From the point of view of water traffic the whole area can be considered as headwater, even though it forms its own water system. Water traffic into the waters of Lake Saimaa is possible only through the channel of Varistaipale. The water at the lake area is still at the same level it was during the Stone Age.

Tuusniemi also has plenty of forests, hills and small ponds. The black grouse
presented in the seal of Tuusniemi describes the things that have been
natural to the area: the nature and the tradition of hunting and hiking in
the wilderness. Today Tuusniemi invests in comfortable living close to nature, which includes the good basic services of a small countryside municipality.
